Grey Wolf

Grey Wolf (Canis lupus)

Large predator, hunting on small to medium size animals, but sometimes even cows and horses. It has a large global distribution, but in most of Europe it is conservation dependent. It plays an important role for ensuring food for scavenging species, most of which are threatened of extinction.
The traditional extensive livestock husbandry practices in SW Bulgaria are an important factor for the well-being of the wolf in the area. In the meantime, the frequent wolf attacks over livestock is generating a conflict between the livestock owners and predators. This leads to frequent attempts of revenge by direct shooting or poison baits use. However, these actions have not affected negatively the wolf population in the area and it is stable for the last 20 years. The poison baits use is an illegal practice, and although rarely used it affects scavenging birds and livestock guarding dogs more than the wolf itself.
